“The CPV summit (in Madrid) was the starting gun in the race for CPV”

Antonio Luque, Director, Instituto de Energía Solar -
Universidad Politécnica de Madrid

Building on the huge success of the inaugural CPV Madrid Summit (April 2-3 2008) attended by over 350 leading Solar executives, CPV Today is pleased to present the Concentrated Photovoltaics North America Summit 2009.

The CPV market in North America is booming, with projected solar installations set to exceed over 6GW by 2020 (Greentechmedia). Over the past year we've seen advances in technology, huge amounts of investment and a large reduction in costs. The result is that everyday CPV takes a larger share of the solar market. In the last six months alone, over $30 Billion of investment has been proposed for plants to be constructed in the next several years. In the last 10 years, the solar industry has mushroomed, and the CPV industry is now growing rapidly (Sarah Kurtz, NREL ) Investment in CPV is bolstered by growing support from local, state, and federal governments with New Jersey, Florida, Maryland, New York, Nevada, North Carolina, Washington and New Mexico all increasing their concentrated solar energy incentive programmes. With over 4,500 MW of CPV powered projects in the pipeline already, CPV projects are literally burning up the agenda, proving that CPV truly is the future of large solar energy generation.

"While the conventional sources of energy will have increasing difficulty in simply maintaining prices and production volumes in the face of fuel stock pressure and grid maintenance requirements, Concentrated Photovoltaics technologies will get cheaper and better understood for a long time to come,"

(Greentechmedia)

Experts expect that CPV will overtake CSP in generation capacity over the next 10 years. And at just over $3 per installed watt, Concentrating Photovoltaic (CPV) technology is fast developing into the most cost-effective renewable energy generator around.

CPV reduces costs and drives up efficiency gains!

Cost wise things look favorable as well with just $30-50m (for a 100MW/year) required for a CPV plant deployment set against the $150- 300m investment required for crystalline silicon PV or thin-film PV plants.

“Some cost analyses have predicted that using high-efficiency concentrator cells can lead to very low costs for solar electricity. These studies imply that there is potential for cost effective implementation of high-concnetration systems even in locations such as Boston ”

Sarah Kurtz, Principal Scientist, NREL

The strength of CPV lies in its ability to significantly drive down the cost per watt installed, and ultimately per kWh produced.   Concentrating light on a solar cell greatly increases its output and with current improvements in technology offering efficiencies of over 40% meaning that US$3/W systems are just around the corner! Furthermore, commercial applications are being scaled up right now, CPV can adapt to your project needs – whether it's a 5MW or 500MW project so you can be sure you will receive ROI – fast. Simply put now is the time to stake your claim and harness that all important competitive advantage.

Sounds great doesn't it… so why aren't we all doing it and watching the profits come in from this red hot industry?

Hurdles to overcome to drive CPV forwards!

Like any renewable technology there are issues to be resolved – luckily they are being solved now and you'll find out how at this must attend event! Top of the agenda is to improve the efficiencies – and costs – of CPV cells under the very high temperatures reached during the concentration process, whilst sunlight tracking for maximum yields, selecting the right lenses and proving the durability of CPV plants are also high priority for those leading the charge. Financially, the key to delivering cost effective commercial plants is the willingness of investors and banks to manage the risks of new projects. This is often harder than it sounds but we'll show you how to secure the investment & finance you need to get your project off the ground. The seemingly never ending maintenance costs of tracking systems have also been an expense in the past, but no longer! You'll find out which tracking system gives you the best yields for your plant, driving up efficiency and your profits!

Federal and government support are also key to the reliability of CPV in the long term, but do these regulations and subsidies extend to CPV? What does the future hold for the Investment Tax Credit? Do you know which tax breaks are available for your project? How do you secure the land your project needs? How do you go about securing transmission capacity? Which states hold the greatest opportunities for CPV? If you want to discover the answer to all these questions then you must join us in San Diego to get your blueprint for commercial success in the USA . This is land grab time and your business needs to position itself right now to make sure you are perfectly placed to take advantage, next year may be too late! The CPV North America Summit 2009 will give you the answers to all these questions and much more. Read on to find out how!
